What is Ayurveda? (And Why the Modern Woman Needs It More Than Ever)

You’re tired, but you can’t sleep. You eat well, but you’re constantly bloated. You’re doing everything “right,” but you just feel… off.

In our fast-paced South African lifestyle, between the traffic on the N1, the load shedding schedules, and the pressure to “have it all”, we have been taught to treat symptoms. We take a pill for the headache, drink a double-shot espresso for the fatigue, and scroll through our phones to numb the anxiety.

But what if we stopped treating the symptoms and started listening to what the body is actually saying?

The Science of Life

“Ayurveda” translates from Sanskrit to “The Science of Life.” It is the world’s oldest holistic wellness system, originating in India over 5,000 years ago. Unlike modern medicine, which is incredible for emergencies and acute illness, Ayurveda excels at lifestyle and prevention. It bridges the gap between “not sick” and “vibrantly healthy.”

It’s Not Magic, It’s Balance

Ayurveda views everything in the universe (including you) as being made up of five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. These combine to create three energy types, or Doshas:

  • Vata (Air & Ether): The energy of movement. When out of balance, you feel anxious, bloated, and “spacey.”
  • Pitta (Fire & Water): The energy of transformation. When out of balance, you feel angry, inflamed, and burnt out.
  • Kapha (Earth & Water): The energy of structure. When out of balance, you feel lethargic, heavy, and stuck.

Why RE:Balance?

We realized that the modern woman doesn’t have time to boil herbs for three hours a day. We’ve taken this ancient wisdom and formulated it for the woman shopping at Pick n Pay, Wellness Warehouse, and on Takealot. It’s the same sacred science, just bottled for your busy life.
